By the time an individual meets me or another interviewer, several sets of eyes have seen their application, a secondary application has been written, and everything looks like it could be a great fit. I guess I might compare it to internet dating… Two people have represented themselves well on paper, look great in writing and in communication, but the first date is often the sink or swim.

I interview two people per interview day with one hour allotted for each interview in the afternoon. Their interview day begins long before this as they arrive early to learn more about our incredibly unique learning environment, our culture, and their potential home as they are guided by first year medical students, have lunch with third and fourth years, and spend time around our campus and hospitals.

I cannot see scores or letters of recommendationonly the things people have written about themselves so I am not biased by extrinsic factors. Here is where I meet you. We shake hands well before we actually shake hands. Did you have a TON of shadowing and patient contact in some form or another? I might be inclined to learn more about what experiences and exposure lead you to the decision to become a physician. I get that you probably want to help people, but why?

One of the most common mistakes I see in applications and interviews is an effect without a cause. Connect the dots for me. Are you an athlete, a musician, an avid stamp collector — what are you passionate about outside of medicine?

The Master of Arts in Biomedical Sciences MA degree is a full-time, three-quarter, graduate level, coursework only program.I thought I would give you a quick idea about how their interview day goes. It was my first interview and it was about two months ago so the details of time are hazy, but I definitely remember the interview very well.

The day started around 8 AM and I arrived about 20 minutes early. I know it sounds way early, but I was not the first person to arrive. Two other interviewees arrived up to 30 minutes earlier than I did! To start the day about 10 med school hopefuls piled into a conference room. Their day ran fairly similar to other schools interview days. After the introductions we were privileged enough to sit through powerpoint presentations about LECOM. Then we got to hear from the financial aid office and other administrators. These activities took up most of our morning.

Right before lunch was the interview. I was interviewed by a 2 person panel. Neither of the men had ever seen my file. Because of this they had no knowledge of my past academic history, MCAT score, research or clinical experience.

They had never even read my personal statement, secondary essays, or letters of recommendation. LECOM feels that if you made it to the interview then those aspects of you application are competitive enough and now your interviewers need to find out what kind of person you truly are.

We spent most of our interview talking about my family my wife and kidsand about my experiences that I have had serving as a religious representative in Japan for my church.

At no time did anyone ask any difficult ethics or recent healthcare hot topic questions. As you can see, none of these are particularly difficult. I only applied to DO programs. The whole interview lasted about a half an hour. After the Office of Admissions receives all of the required application materials, applicant files are reviewed to determine whether applicants merit interview invitations based on established criteria of the Admissions Committee.

Researchers from the Southern University of Science and Technology, in Shenzhen, China — in collaboration with colleagues from other Chinese institutions — have recently conducted a study assessing the potential relationship between blood type and hospitalization due to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

However, they have made their study paper available online in preprint form. The researchers looked at blood group distribution among 2, individuals admitted to hospitals with COVID, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. The people each received care at one of three hospitals in Wuhan, China, or Shenzhen. The researchers found that the proportion of people with blood type A was significantly higher among the group hospitalized with COVID than among the general population.

They also found that the proportion of people with blood type O was significantly lower among the group with COVID than among the general population. It is important to stress, however, that the researchers refer to the risk of needing hospitalization because of COVID, rather than the risk of contracting the virus that can lead to the disease.

This is because the team only looked at data from individuals whose symptoms were severe enough to require hospitalization, not those with mild symptoms that responded to home care.

But does this really mean that people with type A blood have added cause for concern, while those with type O can exhale in relief? Experts not involved with the research have commented on the findings, explaining that the study does not demonstrate a causal relationship between blood type and susceptibility to being hospitalized with COVID
